Mineralisation:
The material consists of a basalt lithology of olivine tholeiitic composition and was sourced from an operating quarry, located about 25 km north from the city of Melbourne (Victoria). The basaltic lava flows in the district forms part of the Quaternary age, Newer Volcanic Province. The mineralogy consists of mainly labradorite plagioclase (63 %) with lesser clinopyroxene (15 %) and olivine (6 %), minor clays (vermiculite, smectite and palygorskite), siderite, magnetite, magnesite (and/or ilmenite), k-feldspar, and traces of chlorite, quartz, hematite, muscovite, annite – biotite – phlogopite, and potentially marcasite and pyrrhotite.
